Radeon 9700 Takes Performance Lead
Nike tiempo legend ati is feeling its oats right about now. Landing one of the most prestigious endorsements for a graphics company blessing of 3D guru John Carmack on its upcoming 3D GPU a first for ATI in several ways. Not only did they get the endorsement, but ATI got this endorsement over nVidia GeForce Ti 4600. Given that ATI has nike tiempo legend sometimes been seen as other graphics company in the shadow of nVidia, this has to be considered a pretty major coup.
In the last round of the ongoing battle for 3D graphics supremacy, nVidia GeForce 4 Ti indoor football boots 4600 won what was essentially an endurance race, where ATI Radeon 8500 was able to go the first few rounds with nVidia current topend offering, but as the dial of pain was ratcheted nike tiempo legend up FSAA, anisotropic filtering, higher resolutions 8500 ran out of gas and the Ti 4600 kept on going. But if the Doom3 showcase of R300 at this year e3 is any indicator, we got quite a showdown in store when nVidia NV30 arrives this fall. R300 has been given the brave, bold and daring commercial name of Radeon 9700 (Why are code names always better than product names?), and arriving with it is ATI valuefocused DX8 GPU, which has been codenamed RV250 and now goes by the handle of Radeon 9000. ATI, like 3DLabs, prefers VPU, but ATI has nike tiempo legend it standing for visual (unlike 3DLabs virtual) processing unit, for its core chip, instead of the more generic GPU moniker favored by nVidia.
ATI has elected to do something of a staggered rollout, similar to past graphics processors they debuted, so in this story we take you through the inner workings of both GPUs, but because the Radeon 9000 is essentially an updated, more highly optimized Radeon 8500, we going to spend the lion share of the article tearing into the Radeon 9700. And in classic mutual shinkicking fashion, ATI and nVidia have once again attempted to dump water on one another campfires with simultaneous rollouts of products, ATI being Radeon 9700 and 9000 and nVidia being nForce 2 (see our article, Becomes nForce2 Both are important product arrivals, but for very different reasons: ATI is looking to arm itself to the teeth not only to face down GeForce 4 Ti 4600, but more importantly for the coming fall showdown with NV30. Meanwhile, nVidia is looking to establish itself as the premier integrated graphics AthlonXP chipset maker, and given nForce 2 loadout, it appears they are poised to do just that. But back to the matter at hand.
Based on initial benchmarking we did, Radeon 9700 is looking very good, and if nVidia isn feeling a bit nervous, they ought to be. We won know the real lowdown until we hammered more extensively on real hardware to see where this new 3D animal stacks up in the GPU food chain. ATI didn want to release hard benchmark numbers, but for some reason, they were OK with our releasing normalized data (how Radeon 9700 fares relative to GeForce 4 Ti 4600) nike tiempo legend.
